Angela Merkel finally won. Her party (the CDU) had a significant increase of preferences, the SPD (the oldest European Left Party) suffered a heavy crash and the number of people voting was the lowest since the war, but she won. Angela Merkel had dreamed such a result: a clear vote for a stable majority.Merkel will probably change the policies adopted in recent years because this time she won't have to compromise with the SPD. No more "grand coalition", the alliance between Christian Democrats and Social Democrats. Now there will be a "small coalition". It is not just a matter of words. The social democrats have to dry the tears and start over after this defeat that is the worst in the history of the party since 1949.
Now the Eastern girl begins her fifth life and can finally make clear decisions. She couldn't in the past four years due to continual compromise with the SPD. For example, on nuclear power, the Chancellor wanted to go forward while the SPD wanted to close by 2020. Now along with the Liberals, she will probably go on with nuclear power, maybe she will open new nuclear power plants.
On Afghanistan, she won't be longer obligated to talk about withdrawal and she may postpone this event. The question of taxes, like in all right-wing majority, will be probably central again, as the tax cut to businesses and individuals and perhaps also the reduction of inheritance tax. Definitely taboo topics when the CDU was allied with SPD.
But work won't be so easy for Mrs Merkel who, on the economic front, has many fish to fry. The country has suffered a sharp decline in production between late 2008 and early 2009, suffering more than others from the recession. The new majority will also need to reduce the public debt, now around 80%.
Meanwhile, Europe, the United States, Russia, China and India can rest assured because the confirmation of the "Eastern girl" means continuity in German foreign policy.
Merkel will, however, will have to recover the interest of the Germans toward politics that, as evidenced by the significantly lower turnout than in previous elections, has declined.
The first woman in Germany will, however, learn to choose colors with which she dress. At a press conference for the first comments on the vote, Merkel was wearing a red jacket over black trousersa nd a reporter (who probably had nothing better to ask) pointed out that this combination was not really suitable to the circumstances as black is the color of the CDU, but the red is the color of the Social Democrats and together are the colors of the defeated Grosse Koalition.
But Mrs Merkel, who in the past hasn't been disturbed even by those who did boo, immediately replied that was just a random choice and in the future she will definitely wear something yellow.
