Most Italians just don't to understand why it's criminal, inhumane and immoral to reject in Libya immigrants arriving by sea. The members of the government don't understand either, maybe because they ended up being victims of their own propaganda. The Minister of legislative simplification Calderoli says it's not good to let people come to Italy, because immigration deprives the country of origin of labor force and anyway our country cannot accommodate everyone.
The solution would be to help African countries to develop. A brilliant idea, pity that Europe should have helped African countries since after the II World War, instead obscenely enriched itself with neo-colonialism. The European money was invested in Africa not for local development but to extract valuable raw materials, paying them a pittance. In this way, capitalism has systematically impoverished Africa, that is the richest continent in the world for natural resources. So today in Western Europe the GDP per capita is on average about $ 50,000 a year. In Eastern Europe is 10,000 dollars a year per person while in Africa is only 1000.
Since the late 80s and early 90s immigration to Western Europe had a strong impulse, partly because of the fall of the Wall and in part simply because in an increasingly globalized world people can travel more easily.
The reason why the world has these huge differences in income lies in historical injustices that have continued for centuries. Helping African countries cannot stop immigration, we should have start to "help" them 50 years ago, or at least we should had rob them with more moderation. Europe now collects just what it has sown.
In the Horn of Africa, Eritrea and Somalia which are many of the boat immigrants to Italy, GDP per capita is less than 750 dollars a year per person. That means two dollars a day, on average. But people do not flee from those countries only for misery, they flee also because in those countries there is since twenty years a situation of permanent war. Fleeing from hunger and war, they have no alternative but death. They will not stop coming to Europe in any case.
