Someone might get the impression that being a Christian should mean solidarity with our neighbors, especially if they are persecuted. Besides immigrants in the boats often are Christians who in Libya are persecuted and mistreated because of their religion.
Yet we know that the Italian Church has not made a mystery of its sympathies to the current majority that best defend Christian values. It makes one wonder how defends Christian values. With intolerance and xenophobia? With the criminalization of illegal immigrants? These are Christian values? Why does the Church prefers the Italian political parties willing to interfere in the free choices of individuals, when it is obvious that adherence to Christian values cannot be imposed by law and nothing good can come from attempts to do so. Perhaps for the Church certain economic interests are more important than human rights and solidarity towards others.
So what kind of Christians are those who are in the government and those backing them? Christians of the election campaign. You will recognize the tree by its fruit, someone said. And the fruits of intolerance are easily recognizable. As if there is a place now, here, where we can recognize Christ in the refugees fleeing from war and misery. So what kind of Christians are those who reject and condemn him to death? The race of Caiaphas and Pontius Pilate.
