It seems impossible, but in January 2010, The Simpsons turns 20. A very important anniversary that the major Fox will celebrate in a big way. So after the stamps, the documentary and the photos of half naked Marge in Playboy, they started a contest to give supporters the opportunity to create a new character.
"Unleash your yellow" is the slogan used by Fox to invite all lovers of the strange Simpsons family to bring out the yellow part that's hidden inside themselves.
The designers are working on it because they want to turn off these candles in style. The first move, announced in April by the U.S. Post Office, was to print the faces of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie on 44 cents' stamps. Their hilarious expressions have travelled along with packages and letters around the United States.
Then it was the turn of the documentary "The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special in 3-D on Ice" which will air on Fox on January 14, 2010 and it will focus on the cultural phenomenon of The Simpsons.
There was, then, the big surprise of seeing Marge unveiled on the cover of Playboy, something that no other cartoon has ever done. And now, after so many people had fun with the website Simpsonize me assuming the guise of other Simpsons, they can create a character to admire, then, in an episode of the new series, in the same one in which the Coldplay leader will sing for Homer.
But why rely on fans? The designers said it well on their website: "For twenty years the artists and writers of the Simpsons have lovingly labored to create a parade of hilariously memorable charachters beloved by the whole world. Well, that's all over now. The simply fact is, we are tired.Tired and, frankly, too rich to care anymore. "
The deadline for the contest is close, on 28 October. But what many wouldn't like, is that the race is open only to US residents. So, in other coutries, we must wait to see who was the lucky winner and enjoying the new episodes of this funny family which, only with a smile, is able to tell us (better than anyone else) the dark side of contemporary American society.
