The Californian group Dot Eco has the backing of former U.S. Vice President Al Gore. The intention of the group is to sell domains .eco to anyone who wants to buy them and then use up to 57% of the earnings to fund environmental organizations. The idea could make Dot Eco one of the largest global funders of organizations for environment protection.
The second group however, the Canadian Big Room, which has the support of former Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev and the WWF would like to grant the domain .eco only to environmental organizations and companies that demonstrate respect and concern for the protection of the environment. In this case, however, operating costs would be higher and therefore the money that Big Room could allocate to environment projects will be only up to 25% of its earnings. It's possible that at the end the two groups will find an agreement.
The birth of the .eco domain is made possible by new rules adopted by Icann, the body that manages the domains on the Internet. Companies will have the power to propose first level domains with the name of their brand, and individuals with their name instead of the classics .com, .net, so besides .eco in the future could arise other environmental themed domains, such as .green or .earth, but only if the Icann will approve their creation.

I can't see ICANN approving .green or .earth extensions any time soon.
