Once the working world was the natural place of adults. Today, instead, a job is a mirage and more often is a job you couldn't choose. It's just a way to try to survive and meanwhile hoping to find something better. So people sick because of work are growing. More than 4 million Italians suffer from work-related psychological-psychiatric disorders.
The data were presented yesterday by the Institute for Prevention and Occupational Safety (ISPESL) at the XI National Information Day on promoting health in the workplace.
Work, today, kills you slowly. And the effects are devastating not only for those who are unemployed or precarious. Which are the difficulties? There are those who have psychological problems because they can't get a career, because they consider themselves victims of harassment by the boss, becuase they feel
themselves the victim of bullying by colleagues or because they are forced to carry
out tasks that have nothing to do with their skills and qualifications.
But also the gender identity plays an important rule on the disease from work, because women, with 5.4%, show a greater exposure of men (4.1%) to the phenomena of bullying and discrimination.
The aim of this national day of information has been promoting health in the workplace. Too often we leave behind this
problem, forgetting that a good mental health is a prerequisite for
the improvement of work performance. We are not talking about a bunch of people that do not conform to the canons of the modern world. According to the latest survey, 10 million workers see a risk to their health, of these 8 million
and 706 thousand detect risk factors for physical health, and 4
million and 58 thousand believe they are at risk for "psychological
balance".
It would be nearly 3 million people who see work as the cause of their health problems.
The data
therefore explain why, throughout Europe, absenteeism is becoming more
frequent with a loss, in economic terms, going over 20
billion euros.
Sergio Iavicoli, director of the department of occupational medicine ISPESL calls this new phenomenon "a social emergency". One people in four face, at least once in his life, an episode of major depression, which require medical attention".
It's fault of the diurnal rhythm, with shifts of 24 hours, which makes it impossible to have a life outside of work.
"Work ennobles man and makes him free," they said once. Today, the work it's needed only to survive. And given the damage it causes in terms of physical and mental health, in a short time it won't be worth anymore. Work, today, causes health
damage to those who are unemployed and are forced to face every day
anxiety, phobias, panic attacks, until the day they accept, exhausted, anything
they find, regardless of the payment or the type of contract. The only focus becomes being part of the list of "workers".
If Italy and Europe want to leave a future, not necessarily better, to the "young" generation they must find a solution in a hurry, because the modern work
is destroying a generation.
