A million people in the streets of Rome for No Berlusconi day is a sign of hope for Italy and for democracy. Means that citizens are now able to mobilize even without parties, through Internet and blogs. It means that the overwhelming dictatorial power of one man on the media can be broken and the truths that he tries to hide in any way can always be shouted in the streets.
A premier who tries to escape a corruption trial, in which he would probably be convicted, by creating laws to his own benefit, yesterday accused by a mafia informant to have had friendly relations with the Mafia since before entering politics, to the point of plotting with mobsters to kill judges and innocent citizens, a premier who everywhere goes in Italy meets protesters.
A premier who in any democratic country in the world would never have stand as a suitable candidate and at this point anyway would have resigned long ago, after the rash of scandals that hit him, not only corruption and the Mafia but also his promiscuous (and hypocritical) private life made up of parties and available girls, not to mention his fundamental inability, already demonstrated in two previous governments, to do something useful for the country, now sinking into unemployment and the crisis without seeing on the horizon one useful measure by the government, committed only to save the supreme leader from his many sins.
The No Berlusconi day shows that there are millions of Italians who know all these things: the million who took to the streets in Rome, tens of thousands of others who were in other Italian cities, the many who could not attend the event but who have written on blogs and Internet to support the initiative.
The No Berlusconi Day of course cannot be a goal, not only because Berlusconi will try in every way to stay in power, given that he faces jail for corruption and mafia, but also because there are still, unfortunately, millions of Italians, shaped by years of propaganda, who think he's basically a good person and a great statesman. If he was a good person he would not need to attack the judiciary and make laws to save himself from justice. And if he was a great statesman would not need an army of servants in information, television and otherwise, who tell stories to Italians from morning to night. The majority of Italian television in fact speak as little as possible on this day, if not to denigrate him, because in Italy there is no more free information for quite a while.
But despite everything, even if the arrogance of Berlusconi grows day after day, his efforts to hide the truth about his past and his inconsistency as leaders have every day a new crack and in the country increase the citizens who can no longer withstand such unworthy head of government and take to the streets to say it. The No Berlusconi day was a triumph for Italy that really believes in justice, freedom, equality and the Constitution. Tomorrow Berlusconi will probably still be president of the council. The resistance continues.
