"When I hear the word culture, I reach for my gun," said Goebbels, the propaganda minister in Nazi Germany, the same who said that a lie repeated a thousand times becomes the truth. Sounds like he is the cultural reference of the current Berlusconi's political majority in Italy. To complete the occupation of Rai public television they only have to destroy RaiTre, the third channel, and their are working on it. Meanwhile, ministers Brunetta, Bondi and Gelmini attack Italian cinema.
Especially "The Great Dream" by Michele Placido, a movie on the italian 1968 whose leading actress has won the Mastroianni Award at Venice, the only award won by an Italian film. Minister Bondi boasts of his cuts in the government funds for culture and Brunetta, who we don't understand what the hell has to do with culture, speaks against italian directors funded in part by the state but not earning enough in theatres. Minister Gelmini meanwhile, who we never understood what the hell has to do with education and school, gets angry with 1968.
It's true that there are many cultural events that could not survive without the support of the state. Only people who hate culture and intelligence, or at least ignore them completely, can see in this a reason to let them die. There was no support for culture in Italy in the Middle Ages, in the dark days of our history in which only a few monasteries preserved libraries and knowledge. Eliminate state funding for culture also means destroy the jobs of a very high number of people.
Eliminate them also means that only what is pleasing to the low instincts of the general public can continue to live. Realities, stupid quizzes, idiotic talk shows and similar stuff. A policy of commercial television, and therefore perfectly consistent with the government. The ministers named above in fact are not public servants, paid by all citizens, even those that didn't voted them, but Berlusconi's Mediaset employees. So all that makes no audience on Mediaset network can be eliminated, from opera to movies and plays. It's conflict of interest, baby. That's the reason why citizens should not elect a commercial television owner as premier.

Regarding Rai Tre, the only italian tv channel not praising Berlusconi, they have started with boycott. Investigative journalism show Ballarò was moved to not disturb the celebration of the beloved leader giving new houses to the Abruzzo earthquake victims. Will be conveniently forgotten all the earthquakes victims that have not and will not have the houses. The other two major investigative journalism shows of Rai Tre, Annozero and Report are hindered at every turn by the current public television leadership appointed by the government, and the situation can only get worse.
In fact the government does not want the italian citizens to wonder about the conditions of this country watching movies and plays that can make them think or even worse, news shows where there are real journalists, namely those not paid by the boss.
