Today, all over the world, we celebrate the Day to end Violence Against Women. Forced marriages which also involve children, genital mutilations, rapes in contexts of war: all this should not seem distant and stranger, wrote the President of the Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, in a statement. Because, as the Head of State says, the violence has not been eradicated even in developed countries.
Italy, despite the recent more strict law on cases of violence, continues to see increasing cases of violence and intimidation, even among the young. That's why it would be necessary to spread an understanding of the woman who respects her dignity as a person and it would be important to do it right from the schools. But in this sense, unfortunately, the media do not give a hand and not at all want to convey the image of a woman who can say to be "a woman" only because she's not dressed or she is provocative, available to the violence of others.
All over the world there are six million 743 thousand women, according to ISTAT, who have suffered in their lifetime physical or sexual violence, and of these, three million have been attacked during a relationship or after they cut off.
And the most serious crimes are always consumed at the expense of wives or girlfriends: that's why the violence in most cases is not reported. Because who makes it, is someone to whom women grant forgiveness. Approximately 96% of the violence inflicted by a non-partner and 93% of those from partners are not reported. Even in the case of rapes, almost all are not reported (91.6%).
Today there is another news that arrives from the network of Centers anti-violence and raises the alarm about the consequences that the "short trial" (an Italian law) could have on crimes of violence: if it is approved, it would create de facto amnesty for the perpetrators of not severe abuse for which penalties are less than 10 years. These crimes for most of the cases (4 out of 5) are consumed at home.
Nadia Somma, president of "Demetra-Donne in aiuto", says this law "will be an amnesty, the power of abuse will be stronger."
In Italy, women will take to the streets on Saturday, November 28th for the national demonstration to end violence against women, "for freedom of sexual choice and gender identity, for the civilization of the relationship between the sexes, for a free and non-sexist communication, against the use of women's bodies for political and economic aims. "
Aware that the road ahead is still uphill.
