Burning Earth
In December, Copenhagen, Denmark's capital, will host a UN conference on climate in which environmental groups and international organizations are hoping to see real progress in the fight against climate change. For this reason the UN has launched an online petition requesting world leaders to sign a crucial agreement on reducing emissions in the coming years. The time to do something is running out, while worldwide incidence of floods, storms and droughts is increasing.

Nuclear
The Italian government, completely ignoring the will of the people who voted for the abandonment of nuclear power in the 1987 referendum and the continuing opposition to the project of a majority of Italians, unveiled plans to build new nuclear plants in cooperation with France. The sites of course will be militarized and therefore will be difficult if not impossible, to protest.

flipfloprecycledinKenia290709Often it happens to little guys, but everyone at least once in their life have lost their flip flop walking on the beach, falling from a dinghy, jumping on the port. And those slippers will route who knows how many kilometers offshore. Somewhere, however, they should have gone.

Chinawindenergy230709When we talk about China we always think about the country which is opening new coal-fired power every ten days or we think about the country that does not follow all of the limits of the Treaty on climate change or we think about that place where walking without a mask on the street is more harmful than smoking thirty cigarettes a day. Yet China has also another side of the coin.

Nuclear plants in France
The technique is always to make the  worse things when no one looks. So now that the media and newspapers (those not on the payroll of the italian premier) are distracted by the G8 dell'Aquila, the Senate has approved the so-called "law of development". The reason why this law will be famous, or infamous, it is that committs the government to find in six months sites to build new nuclear plants and sites for the storage of radioactive waste.

Protest against incinerators in Italy
That kind of news should go on first page on all newspapers and be covered on television  shows, if in Italy there was some sort of free journalism. The news is that there are several research now that demonstrate beyond any doubt that the smoke of incinerators quadruples the cancer incidence in populations living near these plants.
