internshipdoesnothelpMany people believe that the internship can help to enter in the working world and that it can help to make some contacts, not only to have something more on your curriculum. But in Italy a stage does not help very much. Because, as often happens in this country, there is no control. On May 6, 2009, Isfol (Institute for the Development of Workers Training) and Republic of the interns (a website) have opened a poll to see who is the Italian intern. And now they have the first results.

Eleonora Voltolina, director of the Republic of the interns, showed, a few days ago in Verona during the Job & Orienta fair, a preview of the most interesting data so far emerged from the nearly 3 thousand questionnaires. With her, there was also Geneva Benini, Isfol researcher.
The identikit of the official Italian intern will be presented, however, only in January 2010, but at the moment there are already some interesting data.
The poll was open to anyone in life had made just one stage and it wanted to get out of the shadows the Italian 400 thousand trainees to understand who they are, how old are they, and especially what they expect from the stage.
The response of half of the participants (43.9%) was "find a job", but this most of the times does not happen.Because only 3 stages in 100 turns in the contract much sought-after today, the Open-ended contract and less than 1 in 5 leads to an other type of contract.
"In almost half the cases - said Eleanor Voltolina - the stage ends with a handshake and goodbye, and it is alarming that even one in five (18.5%) the proposal that comes is an extension of the Stage -- a circumstance which should instead be more unique than rare."
And all this despite more than 90% of the trainees completed the training course that, once out of two, does not provide even the reimbursement costs. So, in most of the cases (37.8%) who took part at the survey, today is still looking for a job.
Many women (68.9%) responded to the appeal, and 65.2% of the total consisted of 25-30's, all with high education as 44.6% of respondents have a university degree, 27.1% had a three-year degree and 13.7% even a master's degree.
Often, then, participants have to commute or even relocate to another city to get to work, forced, therefore, to support transportation, housing and subsistence costs with their own pockets. "Almost half of the people talked with us, - said Eleanor Voltolina - said they had not received even one euro of reimbursement of expenses." This despite most of the times the stage lasts much more than the 4 or 6 months provided, but it extends up to 12 months. Sometimes more even if it's not legally possible. But it was never seen anyone controlling the workplace, especially the journalist's one.
Yet despite all the drawbacks, young Italians are workaholic and declare that the quality of the internship is good (35.3%) or even very good (18.1%).
Over the years, however, we have lost the educational value of the stage, so that the student-workers have voted for the 50% very negatively on the figure of the tutor. For 18% of respondents, the tutor was only a signature on the form. But even here, there's no control, no one who has to confirm the tutor and no trainee would ever defy a possible future employer work.
So, once again, in our country what could be a good tool into the world of work has become instead a way as any other to get, legally, the labor force at no cost. A legalized exploitation of which the state never worries about.
