If tonight the Tg1 (italian state-owned main tv news program) opened its evening edition with the save the premier law, calling it so. If it said that the law to shorten the statute of limitation for all but the most serious crimes and those of immigrants is unconstitutional, racist and in fact an amnesty for bribers, polluters, crooks and many others such criminals? If the Tg1 would speak for the first time in its history of all the trials in which Berlusconi stands accused?
If the Tg1 tonight, as it has never done before, interviewed some of the girls who attended the prime minister's parties? If the Tg1 tonight spoke of thousands of workers who have lost their jobs, unemployment, the precarious jobs? If the Tg1 tonight talked about Cosentino and Dell'Utri, the Camorra and Mafia, and with a report told in depth the story about all the relationships between mafia and italian politics in recent years? If the Tg1 said how many people have been killed this year alone by the mafia, murders ordered by the same mobsters who have good relationships with local and national politicians? If the Tg1, as it has ever done, said that incinerators and nuclear waste kills and in Italian waters were sunk dozens of ships laden with toxic waste, that global warming will destroy our planet and that the government so far did nothing against pollution? If Tg1 spoke of the inhuman conditions in our prisons and of the too many deaths among detainees? If it spoke of the investigations on the G8 summit in Genoa and the violence of the police? If it'd show the desperate refugees rejected to Libya, if it spoke for once, for the many immigrants and the Roma who are not criminals but victims of unjust and indiscriminate repression? If suddenly Tg1 journalists had a burst of dignity and pride and remember what it means to be a real journalist and ask real questions to Italian politicians?
If they'd ask how politicians can accept in their parties people who had personal relationships with members of organized crime? If they'd ask how you cannot resign when you stand accused of corruption? If they'd ask how you can be a Christian and not have the slightest christian compassion?
If tonight Tg1 television news would became a real news program similar to those of any civilized country instead of the master's voice? If it became simply a really Christian newscast, on the side of the poors, the unemployed, the victims rather than on the side of the powerful? If it were the news of Italian citizens and not the news of politicians? Had it done that since 1994, would we be in the situation where we are?
If those who work at Tg1 would dare to rebel against this tide of lies wrapped by Berlusconi's media regime which they air every night, and made the revolutionary act of telling the truth, for one evening at least. Truth is freedom, really. The truth is revolutionary.
Of course the next day they could risk anything, from a firing squad to perpetual exile in some regional headquarters. But for one day, at least one, Tg1 would be a real newscast, and they would be real journalists.
